When I was three months old my dad was arrested, and my mom discovered he was living a double life. Due to his 7-year prison sentence, my mom suddenly became the sole parent to my brother and me. It was traumatic but she chose to push herself and us to find joy, music and light every day. Literally.
My mom has countless disco balls and twinkle lights hung around our home. She spins records and writes lyrics on the bathroom wall.
Despite my hearing loss, I was raised in a home where music not only provides income but also inspiration and hope. Not having a traditional nuclear family is something I continue to come to terms with. But I know I’m not alone. I gather with my friends and family…and just dance.
